At first we pick you up at the hotel to head towards the historic center of the city, a captivating urban jewel that has the largest and best-preserved colonial enclave in Latin America, and the very first city in the world to be declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1978. The tour starts at the Guápulo Viewpoint where you can see the Church and Convent of the same name.
Then, the tour takes Av. 12 de octubre in direction to the National Assembly, where there is a mural with a historical review of the Country. We continue the Alameda park, which is one of the first parks in the city. We arrive at the unique Basilica of the National Vow, different due to having gargoyles in the shape of animals of the Ecuadorian fauna as part of the decoration of the Church. We will have a brief stop and explanation; we continue towards the Plaza de la Independencia, where we must walk. We will visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, The Church of the Sagrario, the Company of Jesus, and the Church of San Francisco (It does not include tickets.) We return to our transport to visit the Panecillo viewpoint, from where you can see the whole city, in its four cardinal points.
Afterwards, we head north and towards the “Mitad del Mundo City” (includes entrance) where there is the monument that commemorates the arrival of the French Geodesics who together with Pedro Vicente Maldonado in the colonial era made measurements to determine the center of the world.
In this place you have the possibility to change hemispheres with a single step. Inside the monument there is a recount of the Ethnic groups that exist in the country. You can visit the Intiñan Museum (Tickets not included). Here you can carry out different entertaining and exclusive experiments due to the fact of being in the middle of the equator. Return to the hotel.
Day 3. Quito – Cotopaxi.
We leave the city through the “Panamericana Sur” highway on the route called Avenida de los Volcanes, if the weather allows it, we can admire the beauty of some majestic volcanoes. We will visit the Saquisilí market (only Thursday), where indigenous people make and sell diverse handicrafts. Afterwards, we will continue towards the “Cotopaxi” Volcano which is 5,897 m. tall and is the second highest active volcano in the country. This mountain has a conical shape with a large black spot near the top. This is a smooth stone called “Yanasacha” that doesn’t allow snow to stick to its surface. In this place you will visit the Museum of the Cotopaxi National Park, place where animals from the area are exposed. Next there is a stop at the Limpiopungo Lagoon. Outside of the park we will get to know a traditional hacienda. Return to Quito. Accomodation.
Day 4. Quito – Amazon Region.
Breakfast. We will leave towards the Ecuadorian East (oriente). Upon arriving at the Arajuno bridge, where we will take a motorized canoe heading upstream for 20 minutes to begin our great experience in the tropical forest. On this boat trip, that travels along a river that flows zigzag through the jungle like a giant snake, you can appreciate the magic and beauty of the Amazon rainforest. This is considered the main system of the Pacha Mama (Mother Earth). Once we arrive at the dock of Itamandi Ecolodge, our staff will welcome you. From there we will continue to relax in the lounge with a fresh tropical snack and a brief informative meeting that will contain general information about accommodation and activities.
At night, night walk (optional)
At night with the help of a flashlight and our camera we will make a night excursion, which will allow you to listen and catch the night sounds of fishing bats, owls, some insects, tarantulas, frogs and possibly snakes. If the sky is clear, we could have the opportunity to observe a lot of stars. Dinner and accommodation.
Day 5. Amazon Region
Saladero excursion (depending on time and weather)
Early in the morning we will take a 15-minute canoe ride upriver to visit the Parrot Saladero, a unique place where parrots and parakeets gather in order to obtain minerals that help them digest the fruits or seeds that have consumed. Hundreds of parrots and parakeets will approach the treetops and then go down the clay wall to eat this mineral-rich land. It is essential to have some binoculars to enjoy this magnificent natural act. We return to the Lodge to have breakfast. After breakfast, we will go on a walk through a primary and secondary forest. This activity takes about two to three hours.
We return to lunch. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a cultural activity. An Amazonian Kichwa community will welcome us and proceed to share their lifestyle and interaction with the forest. In this meeting, you will discover the part of the Amazon that is not found on the maps: the Amazonian natives in their daily lives.
Part of our visit to the community is to share the famous “chicha”, a fermented yucca drink that has become an essential part of their parties and daily consumption. We will participate in the preparation of this drink, along with some traditional dishes. We finish the visit with a traditional dance performed by the children of the community; we will also have time to buy some crafts made by the natives of the area. This small business is very helpful to support the daily life of the indigenous peoples of the area. Dinner and accommodation.
Breakfast. We will head towards Papallacta, which is known for its hot springs and lagoon, where much of the drinking water for Quito is extracted. The hot springs of Papallacta, at 3300 meters high, are located on the shore of the Papallacta River. It is surrounded by bland lands with a great variety of Andean flora and fauna such as the Andean Condor, the national bird. Papallacta has 9 hot pools and 3 pools of cold water from the river, which provides a very picturesque panorama.
Because it is located between 2 volcanoes, the Cayambe and the Antisana, their magma represents the source of heat for the hot springs. Temperatures may vary between 30ºC to 70ºC; these natural pools contain high percentages of sulfate, chloride, sodium, calcium and a trace of magnesium. They are odorless and colorless but leave a slight salty taste. These waters have healing properties such as: improving intestinal function; anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, diuretic and anti-rheumatic effects; aid in respiratory, renal arthritic problems. It is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the treatment of thermal baths or do horseback riding and short walks. Return to Quito.
Day 7. Papallacta hot springs – Transfer out.
Breakfast. Depending on the flight time, our staff will take you to the airport.
